The Barber's Brief - New Names, Same Job.
EP 249 · Nov 3, 2026 · 35 min · Marc & V
0:00 / 35:09
The short version
Marc and V compare notes from two marketing conferences, The Gathering in Banff and ANA Masters in Orlando, and reach the same verdict: almost every “breakthrough” on stage was a marketing fundamental wearing a 2026 outfit.
This week:
- The Gathering (Banff). Marc reports back from Canada’s biggest brand festival, where the Effies and the effectiveness crowd shared the main stage with cult brands. YETI’s 20-year playbook, mental availability and category entry points from the keynote, and the question running through the whole episode: when a client says “community” and you’d call it market orientation, does the word even matter?
- ANA Masters (Orlando). V’s four keynotes, decoded. Harley’s “RIDE,” Gatorade turning a $17B sports-drink category into a $60–100B hydration one, Clorox’s “continuous relevance,” and LEGO killing its own “we tried that before” beliefs. Underneath all four: mental availability, distinctiveness, market orientation. New names, same job.
- Comparison is the thief of brand growth. Jenni Romaniuk (Ehrenberg-Bass) on why benchmarking against the category leader makes you measure the wrong things. Set your brand assets and ad attribution to 100%, and judge buying-moment links against your own size, not whoever’s winning.
- Measurement vs judgment. Josh Stephenson line that we’ve democratised measurement but not judgment, proven by Instagram’s 90-minute video and Microsoft’s 60,000-person voluntary exit. When everyone can measure everything, the rarest skill left is knowing what to ignore.
- Plus Ad of the Week: YETI’s “Four Letters” (Wieden+Kennedy), the 20-year playbook running underneath a 60-second spot.
Coming up: a Sharp Cut on brand archetypes and Maslow’s hierarchy, then Rica Facundo (WARC) on the Pace Principle.

SPEAKER_00: Welcome back to another episode of Our Barber's Brief. If you're new to listening around here, Mark and I like to use this forum to discuss things that have caught our attention over the last couple weeks: the good, the bad, the ugly, the overhyped. We also like to highlight out of the week because good creative still deserves celebration. Mark, good morning. How you feeling, buddy? I am feeling pretty good.
