This policy explains what personal information The Sleeping Barber collects through www.sleepingbarber.ca, why we collect it, and the choices you have. The short version: we collect your email and a few details when you ask for something, we use them to send you that thing, and we never sell them.
Who we are
The Sleeping Barber is a marketing podcast and media platform operated by Marc Binkley and Vassilis Douros ("we", "us"). We are based in Canada. Questions about this policy or your information go to privacy@sleepingbarber.ca.
What we collect
We only collect what you give us, plus a small amount of technical information needed to run the site.
| When you | We collect |
|---|---|
| Request The 8 Fundamentals | First name, email address, the role you select, and whether you ticked the box to receive The Fade |
| Unlock your diagnostic breakdown | Email address, your answers and score, and whether you ticked the box to receive The Fade |
| Subscribe to The Fade | Email address |
| Use the partner, guest pitch or contact forms | Name, email address, company and your message |
| Complete the diagnostic without giving an email | Your answers and score, stored anonymously and not linked to you |
Consent records. When you give us your email, we also record the date and time, the page you were on, whether you opted in to The Fade, and the exact wording shown beside the opt-in. This lets us show what you agreed to, which Canadian law requires.
Campaign information. If you arrive through a link we shared, we record which link or campaign brought you (for example, a LinkedIn post). This tells us which channels work.
Technical information. Like most websites, our hosting provider processes your IP address and browser details to deliver pages, prevent spam and keep the site secure.
How we use it
We use your information to:
- Send you what you asked for: the one-page summary, your diagnostic breakdown, and the full handbook when it is released
- Send you The Fade, only if you opted in
- Reply to partnership, guest and contact enquiries
- Understand our audience in aggregate, for example the share of readers who are brand side marketers or agency leaders
- Improve the site and the diagnostic, using anonymous and combined results
- Keep the site secure and prevent spam
What we never do:
- We never sell or rent your personal information.
- We never give sponsors or partners your name or email. We may share aggregate audience figures with them, such as total subscribers or the mix of roles, which never identify anyone.
Your consent and our emails
We follow Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL).
- The Fade is opt-in only. The box is never pre-ticked. If you don't tick it, you won't receive the newsletter.
- Without the box, you only get what you asked for. That means the summary or breakdown you requested and, if you requested The 8 Fundamentals, one email when the full handbook is released.
- Every email identifies us and includes our mailing address: [MAILING ADDRESS].
- Unsubscribe anytime using the link at the bottom of any email, or by writing to privacy@sleepingbarber.ca. We act on unsubscribe requests within 10 business days, and usually much sooner.
Who processes your information
We use a small number of service providers to run the site. They process information only on our behalf, to provide their service to us.
| Provider | What they do | Information involved |
|---|---|---|
| Lovable and its hosting providers | Hosts the website and stores form submissions | Everything you submit through the site, and technical information |
| Beehiiv | Sends our emails and manages subscriptions | Name, email, role, opt-in status |
| Buzzsprout | Hosts our podcast audio | Technical information when you play an episode |
| YouTube (Google) | Plays episode videos embedded on the site | Technical information when you play a video |
Where it is stored. Some of these providers store information outside Canada, including in the United States. Information stored in another country may be accessible to that country's courts and authorities under its laws.
Cookies and similar technologies
We keep these to a minimum.
- Diagnostic progress. Your browser temporarily stores your diagnostic answers so a page refresh doesn't erase them. They are cleared when you close the tab.
- Campaign tracking. We remember which link brought you to the site for the length of your visit.
- Embedded videos. We use YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode. YouTube may set cookies once you press play, under Google's privacy policy.
We do not use advertising cookies or sell browsing data. A short notice on your first visit explains this; choosing "Accept" or "Decline" stores that choice in your browser so the notice doesn't return.
How long we keep it
We keep your information while you remain subscribed or while we still need it to deliver what you asked for. If you unsubscribe, we stop emailing you right away. We keep a minimal record (your email, what you consented to, and when you unsubscribed) so we can respect that choice and show we followed the law. Ask us to delete everything else and we will. Anonymous diagnostic results contain no personal information and may be kept indefinitely.
How we protect it
Access to subscriber information is limited to the two of us. Our service providers protect data with industry standard security, including encrypted connections. No system is perfectly secure, so if a breach ever puts your information at real risk, we will tell you and the relevant authorities as the law requires.
Your rights
You can ask us at any time to:
- See the personal information we hold about you
- Correct anything that is wrong
- Delete your information
- Withdraw your consent to emails
Write to privacy@sleepingbarber.ca and we will respond within 30 days. If you live outside Canada, for example in the UK or EU, you may have additional rights under your local law, and we will honour them. If you are not satisfied with our answer, you can contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
If you are in the EU or UK
If you are in the European Union or the United Kingdom, the GDPR (and UK GDPR) applies to how we handle your information.
- Our legal bases. Consent for The Fade and any optional emails; performing your request for the summary, handbook or diagnostic breakdown; and our legitimate interest in running a secure site and replying to enquiries.
- Your extra rights. You can also ask us to restrict or object to processing, and to receive your information in a portable format. Withdrawing consent never affects processing that happened before.
- Transfers. Where information leaves the EU or UK, we rely on our providers' standard contractual clauses or equivalent safeguards.
- Complaints. You can complain to your local data protection authority, though we'd appreciate the chance to fix things first at privacy@sleepingbarber.ca.
If you are in California
If you live in California, the CCPA (as amended by the CPRA) gives you the right to know what personal information we collect, to ask us to delete or correct it, and not to be treated differently for using these rights. We do not sell or share your personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising, so there is nothing to opt out of. To make a request, write to privacy@sleepingbarber.ca. We will verify your request by email before acting on it.
Children
This site is for marketing professionals. It is not directed at anyone under 16, and we do not knowingly collect their information.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top. If a change affects how we use your email, we will tell subscribers before it takes effect.
