The short version
The final installment (part 3) of our series about the incentives trap.
In this episode, Marc and Vassilis outline the blueprint for success where they actively challenge the complexities of marketing measurement, emphasizing the need for a goal-oriented approach rather than relying on easily accessible metrics.
They also discuss the dangers of short-term measurement, the importance of understanding long-term brand health, and introduce the concept of incrementality measurement as a way to better assess marketing effectiveness. The conversation also highlights the need for a shift in media metrics to ensure that marketing is viewed as an investment rather than a cost center.

SPEAKER_01: Welcome to the sleeping Baba Pony.
SPEAKER_02: Welcome back to the Sharp Cut, where we take marketing's biggest comfort blankets and cut them with research and real-world evidence and separate out what we think is true from what actually is. Exactly. If you remember two episodes ago, we started this series on incentives and we introduced Good Heart's Law. And when we measure what we measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure. And so we showed how it operates at a campaign level. For example, CTRs optimized into clickbait, MQLs gamed into garbage, wrongs inflated by attribution that reports claimed outcomes instead of actual ones.
SPEAKER_01: Last episode, we went two floors up. The same disease, targeting a proxy instead of the real thing. Operates at the board level with shareholder value, at the CEO level with revenue, and at the media plan level with CPM. Roger Martin called that the analytical fallacy. Peter Field called it the vicious circle of decline. And Dale Harrison said revenue isn't even growth. I still am stuck on it.
